One Alberta criminologist says the triple-fatal guard shooting was not for money but to cause damage.
According to retired University of Alberta criminology professor Keith Spencer, money was likely not the motive behind the deadly shooting.
He tells the Calgary Sun, Travis Baumgartner had all the signs of a depressed, mentally unbalanced man looking to hurt.
Spencer pointS to several Facebook status updates where Baumgartner questions what would happen if he “popped people off.”
He says a man descending into mental illness quite often gives evidence of deep seeded anger or desperation online, and given the degree of violence in the shooting Baumgartner wasn’t only after money.
Meanwhile, families and friends are finding some relief in Bamgartner’s arrest.
A relative of slain Michelle Shegelski says she’s happy he was taken in by police alive and now justice can be served.
Co-workers of another victim, Eddie Rejano, collected donations for the man’s wife and two young sons at a shooting club competition, Saturday.
Rejano had been a member at the gun club for years and staff started a memorial fund for his family.
A spokesman for G4S Cash Solutions Canada says the amount of support from the security community and other companies has been overwhelming.
Many are also sharing photographs on social media sites in support of the victims, including the survivor of the shooting.
Military firefighter Matthew Schuman remains at the U of A hospital in critical condition.
He’s surrounded by family members who want to remain private about his care.
The family is being offered administrative assistance from The Canadian Forces that will extend for years if need be.
Schuman has been a full time Air Force Member since 2009.
