The province wants it’s two biggest cities to know it’s ready to hear their growing pains.
Monday, representatives from the legislature, Edmonton and Calgary signed a memorandum of understanding to open up a dialogue.
The three have formalized their commitment in hopes of developing a “Big City Charter” to meet the challenges of growth, the hope is to have the charter in place before the next municipal election.
Doug Griffiths, Minister of Municipal Affairs, says this is not about money, but instead opening up the lines of communications between the government and cities.
He says this is the first step to develop the new framework the premier wants which will help Calgary and Edmonton meet infrastructure needs.
The minister, along with Edmonton mayor Stephen Mandel and Calgary Deputy mayor Jim Stevenson signed the agreement.
