New Calgary rec centres won’t force tax increases

There will be no tax hike to help pay for four badly-needed recreation centres in Calgary.
According to The Calgary Sun, the Priorities and Finance Committee supported plans to put up new facilities in Great Plains, Quarry Park, Seton and Rocky Ridge.
In order to carry out the new builds, the city will have to take on an additional $250-million in debt.
Committee vice chair Ald. Gord Lowe tells the paper instead of raising property taxes, some of the money needed for the project will come from its community and recreation levy it charges developers, as well as from its federal GST rebate.
