Three oil companies in the province are adopting random testing for drugs and alcohol in the workplace and while unions claim it’s ineffective, the trucking industry disagrees.
DriverCheck Inc, the largest provider of random testing in Canada, shows over 14 years and almost 240,000 tests, they have reduced positive rates among truck drivers by 80 percent.
Random testing offers the opportunity to spot potential problems early on, and take appropriate action before it’s too late.
A lead doctor with DriverCheck believes in a few years, random testing could also decrease the number of workplace injuries in the oilsands.
