Too much rained forced boil water advisory

Mass rainfall and resulting flooding is what forced Alberta Health Services to issue a boil water advisory last month in Calgary.

Dan Limacher, Director, Water Services says an underground valve chamber was flooded which led to the sediment making its way into the water.

“An extensive review has determined that an extreme and localized rainfall event flooded a part of the City’s water infrastructure. Specifically, an underground valve chamber was flooded which allowed sediment to enter both a feeder main and a new underground water storage reservoir.”

The intense rain caused soil erosion, plugging stormwater and drainage systems, forcing the water to pool in an area adjacent to the valve chamber.  That water eventually covered the valve triggering it to open and let the sediment in.

A number of neighbourhoods in the northwest were under the advisory for days.
