Rodeo is an incredibly dangerous sport, but some experts are crying foul on what they call inadequate safety testing.
Rodeo sport medic and Mount Royal professor, Mark Lafave, tells The Calgary Herald testing standards for rodeo events aren’t good enough because they don’t accurately re-create the sport.
He says cowboys get injured or die at a higher rate than athletes in any other sport, but a lot of that can be prevented simply by wearing protective headgear; something about half of all rodeo athletes do already.
The rodeo administrator for the Canadian Professional Rodeo Association tells the paper helmets are mandatory for rodeo athletes under 18.
