Calgarians have mixed reactions on ‘greatest city’ comments

In an unscripted moment during a Centennial Stampede event, Prime Minister Stephen Harper said Calgary is Canada’s top city.
In his own words, he said the founders of the Stampede would be amazed to see that the event has been part of the growth of the greatest city in the greatest country in the world.
Critics and politicians are arguing back about Harper’s comments.
The mayor of Vancouver says Harper was clearly ‘mixed up’ during his speech while other politicians have come forward in support of ‘all’ Canadian cities.
Harper has never even made his favourite Canadian hockey team known, so the free expression of his love for Cowtown is surprising for some.
But Spencer, a born and raised Calgarians says, he’s not shocked Harper freely shared his opinion.
“Depending on where you’re from, you’ll always have an affinity towards where you’re from. Naturally, Vancouverites would think that their city is the best and I think maybe it’s just a rivalry thing,” he said.
As for backlash from other politicians from municipalities around the county, Rick says, they’re just jealous.
“How can you beat Calgary? It’s such a beautiful city and it’s the heart of the west. The whole town is all about the Stampede and the Western lifestyle and it’s great.”
