Corporate Calgary got its own so-called white hat ceremony Thursday, though it came in the form of a bell.
Stampede brass arranged to have the Toronto Stock Exchange officially ring-out the trading day from downtown Calgary.
The event was held in front of Outlaw the bull, the in front of 5th Avenue Place in southwest Calgary; a fitting move as the TSX helped pay for the creation of Outlaw, a bronze sculpture.
TSX boss Kevan Cowan says the success of the event may inspire them to do special closings more often as they are almost always done from the trading floor on Bay Street in Toronto.
“I have to say it is a bit of a unique event and something we should look at doing more often,” says Cowan. “It does seem like a wonderful opportunity to volunteer, and we should do it more.”
He says Calgary-based companies account for about a quarter of the capital on the TSX, so it makes sense to honour their contributions once in a while.
Ken Thompson, who takes the Stampede president’s chair next year says they wouldn’t have made it to the century mark without the corporate community.
“We get a lot of good advice from the leaders of Calgary’s corporate community, which has helped us grow the Stampede for 100 years,” explains Thompson.
Unfortunately, closing the TSX in Calgary was not good luck for investors. The index closed down an even 1 per cent on Thursday.
