Tour through mountains on the Kananaskis Trail

Looking for a great drive through the mountains? Try taking the Kananaskis Trail off the Trans-Canada Highway.

Start heading south down Hwy 40 to Barrier Lake; you can do all or part of the easy 10km hike around the lake, or try one of the many trails near the lake such as Jewell Pass.

Go south to Kananaskis Village for lunch, where you can rent a bike or rollerblades and explore the paved trails.

Continue south on Hwy 40 for about 30km to the turnoff for the Smith Dorrien-Spray Trails.  Follow it north, then turn left onto Mt. Shark Road and stop in for a tea at Mount Engadine Lodge.

Relax on a patio or take a stroll through Moose Meadow and take a look around for bald eagles, owls, moose or deer.

Take the camera along while walking many of the nearby trails like Tent Ridge or Commonwealth Meadows.

Back on Hwy 742, head north for about 40km to Canmore then head back to Calgary.
