Gasoline sales rise along with prices

The price at the gas pumps isn’t the only thing on the rise these days. So is consumption by consumers.
According to Statistics Canada, gross sales of gasoline rose 1.5 per cent from 2010 to 2011 while drivers paid almost 20 per cent more at the cash register.
“People have their lives to live,” Chris told 660News while filling up his car Monday morning at a service station in Country Hills. “They have to get to where they’re going. I think it’s just based on that. I don’t think they’re trying to buy more gas. It’s just based on what their lifestyle is.”
A straw poll by 660News found some other reasons drivers felt fellow motorists are using more gasoline.
“I guess there’s just more people on the roads,” said one woman. “And they’ll buy their gas and take their holidays.”
“I don’t know,” said another man. “More people making money, buying more cars I guess. More places to put gas.”
“Well we need gas to get around,” commented yet another gentleman, “so we have no choice. We were in Banff yesterday and there was a ton of people there. So maybe we’re buying more gas because we’re staying closer to home.”
Motorists in Ontario and Quebec combined for more than half the country’s consumption while Alberta made up 14 per cent.
