Local one-year memorial for Jack Layton Wednesday

A year ago Wednesday, NDP leader Jack Layton passed away after battling cancer.

In Calgary, there will be a memorial for the politician.

One of the event organizers, Scott Payne, said the memorial service is open to all, no matter age or political alliance.

“We’re not trying to be too somber about it, Jack was a pretty optimistic and upbeat fellow,” he said. “Any events that we’re having correspond to that attitude that he brought to politics, but I mean certainly it is an opportunity to remember the man.”

The event is open to everyone, even those too young to vote and will be at Melrose Bar, Wednesday evening from 7:00 p.m. until 10 p.m.

Payne said the event is also to look forward to the party’s future with the upcoming Calgary Centre by-election.
