A proposed facility at the Kitimat, B.C. terminal of the Northern Gateway Pipeline is sparking interest from cities in the northeastern part of that province.
Despite opposition from Premier Christy Clark, many residents in the area hope the bitumen upgrading facility will reverse an economic decline.
Kitimat mayor Joanne Monaghan tells The Calgary Sun she’s all for the plant, but only if it proves to be environmentally sound. The loss of a mill and a methanol plant in the area took a toll on the town’s population.
The upgrade promises 6,000 construction jobs for five years and 3,000 full time staffers and private contractors.
