City officials push for higher sidewalk closure fees

Officials in Calgary want construction companies to pay more if they are going to block off sidewalks for a long period of time.
Transportation general manager Mac Logan says the closure of pedestrian walkways happens too often.
It has been five years since the city revisited fees for construction related closures.
But The Calgary Herald reports mayor Naheed Nenshi supported the need for tougher rules at a council meeting earlier this summer.
Officials want to look into other solutions like the modified cargo containers on an 11th Ave. sidewalk that shield pedestrians from construction going on overhead.
