London 2012 Paralympic Games get underway

Canada’s 145 Paralympic athletes say they are ready to battle for gold, silver and bronze.

The theme of Wednesday’s opening ceremonies is “enlightenment,” with a mix of classical and dance music moving the show along.

A few days ago, wheelchair rugby player Garett Hickling, from Kelowna, B.C., was named Canada’s flag-bearer.

The five-time Paralympian, who has medalled three times before, calls it quite the honour and he’s looking forward to leading the team into the stadium during the parade of athletes.

Canada finished in 7th place in the medal race back in 2008 in Beijing, with our athletes capturing 50 medals including 19 gold.

The goal this time around is to finish in the top eight among the 163 countries which are participating.

It also possible the London Paralympic Games will be a sell-out, with more than 2.4-million tickets already spoken for.

Medals will be awarded in 21 different sports; the Paralympics wrap up September 9th, with Coldplay scheduled to perform.
