Southeast battery explosion sends one to hospital

The Calgary Fire Dept. knows what exploded at a Cathedral Energy facility Thursday morning, but the question is how it happened.

A battery containing sulfuric acid blew up, with one man suffering acid burns to his face and other parts of his body.

EMS tell 660news the man, around the age of 40, was sent to hospital and is in stable condition following the explosion on 3rd Street at 58th Avenue S.E.

Battalion Chief Frank Nowak said while crews search for a cause, it’s also unclear exactly how the worker got hurt.

“I haven’t gotten the information from the person that got hurt, whether he was just walking by or working on this particular battery or the equipment beside it,” he said.

Nowak added about 70 people were evacuated, as the explosion was contained to the building and deemed not a threat to the public.

There were no other injuries.

Nowak described the battery.

“Approximately two feet long, about an inch and a half round,” he said.
