Banff considering limiting chain stores

Big box stores may soon be turned away from Banff.

On Monday, council debated limiting the number of chain stores that are allowed to open up in the mountain tourist town.

Many local mom and pop shops say it’s becoming hard to compete with them.

Last November, council voted on an all out ban of chain stores, but the proposal now is to set up a quota for big businesses.

But one town councillor tells The National Post the quota could have unintended consequences like driving down rent.

The issue will be opened up to a public hearing in January.
