Calgary firefighters who have lost their lives on the job were remembered over the lunch hour on Tuesday.
The Fallen Firefighters Memorial Service was held in front of the Police Officer and Firefighters Tribute Plaza at city hall.
Fire Chief Bruce Burrell says it is important to remember those who have died, keeping us safe, adding of the 28 remembered, 19 died as a result of job related cancers.
“Some of the cancers are six times more prevalent in firefighters due to the toxins they are exposed to compared to the general population, so there are a lot of people that don’t make it to retirement and then there’s a lot of people that don’t have very much of a retirement, typically two or three years they tend to fall ill and we loose them within a couple years of retirement,” said Burrell.
