Wildrose calls for end to bonuses

Wildrose Party finance critic Rob Anderson is calling for an end to the gravy train reign he sees at the executive level of Alberta’s public-sector.
Anderson wants the House to pass a private member’s bill within the new year that would put an end to what he deems a “culture of entitlement,” resulting from excessive performance bonuses passed down to executives by upper management.
The Airdrie MLA is seeking the belt-tightening initiative to help mitigate the province’s current $3 billion deficit.
Entitled the Taxpayer Protection Act, Anderson says the bonus problem represents a lack of due diligience within public-sector management and recommends such a trimming-of-the-fat measure until the budget picture improves.
Mount Royal University political scientist Lori Williams says although she doubts many Albertans would disagree with Anderson’s initiative, the passing of such a bill could be a tricky tactic as it would require assention by the Progressive Conservatives—an act she says is unlikely due to the history of discord between the two parties.
