Hot, Dry September drives up fire hazard

Just in time for weekend camping, new fire restrictions are now in place for the mountain areas to the west of Calgary.

The ban stretch from the Waterton Lakes area to central Alberta.

Open fires are banned, but you can still have a campfire in a designated pit.

Other parts of the province do have campfire bans, including Little Bow Provincial Park and the Cypress Hills. Several counties and municipal districts have imposed restrictions as well.

The wildfire hazard is very-high to extreme in a large swath of Alberta, including the Calgary region.

It’s been one of the driest Septembers in recent memory. 660News Meteorologist David Spence says there’s only been 1.4 millimetres  of rain so far this month. The average is more than 40mm.

The forecast for the weekend is calling for hot, sunny weather for much of Alberta.
