City’s animal shelter is full

The City of Calgary’s Animal By-law Services is juggling a full house.
The shelter still has 63 cats and 47 dogs waiting to be adopted, despite a recent successful adoption fair.
Animal by-law services director Greg Steinrath explains not licensing your pet can have consequences; a lost pet may never be returned.
Steinrath tells 660News one of the reasons they are so full is because of the long, warm summer we’ve had.
“A lot of owners are leaving there animals out, plus the combination of thunderstorms and hailstorms that we’ve had this past summer. We’ve noticed trends the past couple of years, that when we’ve had these storms come though, we do see a lot more animals escaping their yards and escaping their houses.
Steinrath wants to stress pet owner responsibility.
He says get a license, and make sure your furry friend is spayed and neutered to reduce the amount of unwanted pets that need a home.
