Calgary pharmacy asking for too much information

A Calgary pharmacy has had its hands slapped for collecting too much information about patients’ immune systems.
The Information and Privacy Commission was called in after the Co-op Shawnessy refused to administer a vitamin B-12 injection to a man for not providing his immune status when it wasn’t required.
An investigator found all Co-op pharmacies collect unnecessary information about conditions that affect the immune system such as cancer from all patients.
While some vaccines and drugs require information about conditions that affect the immune system such as cancer, the pharmacist should only ask if it’s clinically relevant.
The Co-op Pharmacies are now changing its practices for injections at the recommendation of the Health Information Act.
