City run golf courses strapped for cash

Politicians are considering turning to taxpayers to lend a helping hand to struggling city golf courses.
Mayor Naheed Nenshi says Calgary’s eight municipal greens are an asset; they just aren’t bringing in enough cash.
Council approved Monday to scrap a mandate requiring city golf courses to turn a profit.
They’re now considering raising rates to pay for much needed upgrades at many of the city’s courses, or making them a taxpayer financed activity, which means they’d be eligible for city funding and grants.
Mayor Nenshi tells The Calgary Sun the issue needs more discussion before they can move forward.
