The poppy is a symbol of respect and remembrance, but it’s also a revenue generator.
The 2012 Poppy Campaign kicks off this Friday and it comes at a time when Calgary’s Veterans Food Bank is in serious need.
It’s row upon row of starkly stocked shelves at the food bank and the cold, snowy weather is a harsh reminder of what’s to come.
But for Joey Bleviss with the Calgary Poppy Fund the stacks of boxes containing a half million poppies offer hope that our veterans needs will be met over the winter.
“For some reason this year the shelves are bare but we’re hoping with the big food drive that the schools put on for us, major oil companies have food drives for us, the Legacy Project has also been assisting us, so hopefully by December our shelves will be full again,” says Bleviss.
The annual Poppy Campaign runs from October 26th to November 10th.
The target for Calgary this year is $2-million in sales.
