Calgary Transit expands peace officer fleet

89 peace officers and counting, for Calgary Transit.
Fifteen additions were unveiled Friday and are expected to get right to work keeping things safe for all travellers.
Co-ordinator Brian Whitelaw with Calgary Transit tells 660News, he’s ecstatic that the organization has doubled the number of peace officers since 2008.
“We’ve got six languages represented among the group and you know again that’s just a great opportunity knowing that we have many folks who certainly don’t have English as a first language and in fact may not speak English, we have officers that can speak with those individuals in their first language,” says Whitelaw.
The fifteen officers were selected from 500 who expressed interest.
Whitelaw explains how the graduates stood out from the crowd:
“These folks come with a very impressive background in terms of enforcement and security skills that adds to the organization; that’ll be beneficial for the team and in particular we’ll add to our team for the opening of the west LRT”, adds Whitelaw.
They completed seven weeks of training specializing in law and security within a transit environment; it also included passing a physical test.
Whitelaw is thrilled with Friday’s graduates, noting the number of officers has been doubled in comparison to 2008.
