Blackouts were poor maintenance, report says

A new report says rolling blackouts in the province this summer were the result of the unnecessary shutdowns of power stations.

The Market Surveillance Administrator Report suggests the companies should face penalties for poor maintenance if their generating units fail again.

A senior advisor says four of 10 stations that shut down because of hot weather on July 9th, had heat sensors set to trip at too low a temperature.

The power outages darkened homes and businesses in Calgary, Edmonton and Lethbridge for hours.

But the Alberta electric system operator tells The Calgary Herald their own investigation of the incident has led to corrective plans that will prevent similar emergency shutdowns in the future.
