Gearing up for big spending

Christmas is exactly one month away as of Sunday.

If you’re always playing catch-up with your finances, chances are, you may need to make a new plan – especially with this month’s extra spending.

As Financial Literacy Month winds down, the Financial Consumer Agency of Canada is offering up a few tools to keep us on the straight and narrow.

Ursula Menke with the Agency says it begins and ends with a budget.

“We have a great budget calculator which does the calculations for you.  You just enter in the amount.  It’s on our website at itpaystoknow.gs.ca.   People can use it and fill it in and it will calculate for you where you are and it will show you where you can save,” says Menke.

She says about 50 per cent of Canadians don’t budget all and a good percentage of those who do, don’t stick to it.
