Canadian tree exports suffering from a blue Christmas

A decline in international demand for Canadian Christmas trees has the industry in a holiday funk.
In 2003, 2.62-million Christmas trees were being shipped to other countries, including Japan, The Netherlands and Venezuela.
Last year that number slipped to 1.73-million.
Co-owner of Pine Meadows Tree Farms in Chilliwack, B.C., Arthur Loewen, says he doesn’t make the effort to export trees anymore overseas.
But adds it’s becoming difficult to make up the cost of the land it takes to grow them.
The Globe and Mail reports tree-growers are trying to battle the growing disinterest with the slogan “nothing says Christmas like a real Christmas tree.”
