Drivers who used southbound Crowchild Trail found alternate routes Monday afternoon, but won’t have to for the morning commute.
The City of Calgary’s Water Services Department has fixed a major water main break underneath the busy road at 33rd Ave. southwest and will have traffic flowing again by 5:00 a.m.
The break has been described by city officials as one of the largest and most complex they have ever dealt with.
The Roads Dept. filled the hole ahead of schedule but commuters are reminded barricades will not be removed until the cooling period is finished.
Director of Roads Ryan Jestin said that equals 230 tonnes of material.
“About a foot worth of asphalt, on top of about three feet worth of gravel, on top of about another foot worth of asphalt,” he said. “So if I lay that in just a straight line, it would be almost 500 metres for a typical residential street in Calgary.”
He said if it was any colder, this project would have taken a lot longer.
