Salmonella outbreak in southern Alberta

Health officials are dealing with an outbreak of salmonella in southwestern Alberta this Christmas season.
Over 30 cases have been reported; mostly in rural areas around Lethbridge, in the Cardston and Blood Nation reserve area.
Janine Sakatch with Alberta Health Services tells 660News the initial case was reported on December 13th.
Sakatch adds many of the infections are secondary, meaning they were spread through household contact.
“We believe that the initial case was a result of poorly prepared or poorly handled turkey,” says Sakatch.
They are reminding people to follow safe cooking practices as undercooked eggs and dirty cooking surfaces are the most common causes of salmonella.
