Province centralizes pathology

The province is no longer relying on rural medical examiners for death investigations, which will now be carried out by forensic pathologists in Calgary and Edmonton.
After being part of the process for more than three decades, the services of some 95 medical examiners were no longer needed as of January first.
According to the Calgary Sun, most of them were doctors working in specialty areas or as family physicians who did the medical examiner duties on a fee for service basis.
Officials say the change is a cost-neutral decision and is being made to help ensure consistency in all death investigations.
