HPV vaccinations begin for Catholic school girls

After years of lobbying, HPV vaccinations are underway for Calgary Catholic school girls.

Letters first went out in December, informing parents of the process and the required written consent.

Spokesperson Janet Corsten tells 660News, it’s still too early to tell how many girls are taking part.

“We did obviously hold parent consultation meetings earlier in the school year,” says Corsten, “and parents did indicate that they were supportive of the vaccine being offered in schools.”

“There’s three innoculations that have to take place in order for the vaccine to be completed,” adds Corsten. “So vaccinations would have started in December and then would continue until the end of the school year.”

A unanimous vote overturned a 2008 ban on the vaccination after an overwhelming show of support from parents earlier in the school year.
