The Canadian Beverage Association is speaking out against research that claims drinking too much pop can lead to depression.
President of the association, Jim Goetz, says reporting the finding was “irresponsible” and that the study is “unscientific.”
Goetz says the rate of depression found by researchers was actually below the average amount of adults the Canadian Mental Health Association expects will experience depression in their lifetime.
He adds the findings do not take into account other genetic or environmental factors and trivialize the issue of depression.
The study by the U.S. Institute of Health claims those who drink more than four cups of soda a day are 30 per cent more likely to be depressed than those who do not.
