At a time when the Redford government is vowing to hold the line or even cut operational expenses thanks to a ballooning deficit, the Calgary Board of Education is giving thought to adding staff to its management team.
Saying its organization has grown more complex, the CBE is considering adding a superintendent and three more area directors.
Area directors are paid between $140,000 and $180,000 a year, while superintendents make between $151,000 and $260,000 a year.
Besides the bleak outlook for provincial finances — the Redford government is facing a possible deficit as high $3 billion for the current fiscal year — the news comes at a time when the board is in the midst of contract negotiations with its teachers.
The local union president tells the Calgary Herald, adding management staff during labour negotiations could irk some of their members who already feel overworked.
