Society wants Alberta’s wild horses protected

A group working to protect Alberta’s wild horses wants them to be declared a heritage species.

President of the Wild Horses of Alberta Society, Bob Henderson, says the horses have a rich history in the province going back to the arrival of the Northwest Mounted Police in the late 1800’s.

Under a management plan, the province allows for the capture of the horses last year, 216 were rounded up with 90 per cent going to slaughter.

Henderson says the horses deserve more respect.

He tells The Calgary Herald, he believes the creatures have a right to be here and have no negative impact on the environment.
