Veterans not taking advantage of parking discount

The Calgary Parking Authority says only one per cent of the city’s veterans have taken them up on an offer of free on-street parking.

City council authorized the agency in December to start crediting vehicles with veteran license plates a monthly $10 credit at ParkPlus meters.

There are nearly 6,000 veterans with those plates but the parking authority says only 80 have registered.

The program is costing only $800 this month instead of the $5,000-$15,000 that was predicted.

Alderman Shane Keating tells The Calgary Herald he’s not too surprised or disappointed; he says he knows the discount wasn’t badly needed, he only wanted to show a gesture of goodwill to veterans in Calgary.

A spokesperson for Minister of Veteran Affairs Steven Blaney writes in a statement: “We encourage all Calgary veterans to take advantage of this program and commend the city of Calgary for this initiative.”
