Oprah Winfrey inspires thousands at the Saddledome

It was a night many waited for; legendary talk show host Oprah Winfrey spoke to a packed crowd at the Saddledome Tuesday.

She came out wearing a teal gown topped off with a white cowboy hat and started the evening by thanking everyone for coming to see her, going on to say Calgary should have invited her to the Stampede.

“I love Canada and when they first called and asked if I wanted to come, I was like, oh great! I get to go to Lake Louise, it’s going to be so much fun, ya’ll should’ve invited me in July to that Stampede,” she said.

Oprah told the crowd we all have a calling and an inner voice we need to listen to.

“My mother was a maid, my grandmother was a maid, and she said Oprah Gail, you better watch me now girl, because one day you goin’ have to learn this for yourself; and the spirit inside me, I didn’t know it was a spirit, just a little voice said, mm-mmmmm, I don’t think so.”

The evening was filled with plenty of light-hearted moments.

“I have been listening to that little voice my entire life, I stand here tonight in Edmonton because of that little voice,” she said, to which the crowd loudly corrected her.

“Calgary!” she said. “I knew that was gonna happen.”

As part of her talk about inspiration, her early life, struggles and career, she also explained why she decided to come to Calgary.

“I have such a glorious life and if anything that I can say or share will help add to the glory in your life, then I want to share it,” she said.

Lite 95.9’s Christina Rowsell was at the event and said the experience lived up to expectations.

“I think Oprah was everything that we expected; she was inspirational, she was motivational and I think the best part out of all of it, was that she was a human being,” she said.
