United Way surpasses goal

The United Way is celebrating a banner campaign for 2012.

The organization said Wednesday that, thanks to the generosity of Calgarians, $55.2 million was raised in 2012.   That exceeded the campaign goal by $1.2 million.

United Way president Lucy Miller is thrilled at how Calgary pulled together to support social programs that she says make a lasting difference.

She applauds eleven thousand volunteers, the corporations and the individuals who pitched in and calls the campaign milestone a community achievement.

“It’s an opportunity for everybody, no matter what their walk of life, no matter how much they make, no matter what work they do, there seems to be a real recognition of how powerful they are if they come together to change the city and to bring it forward,” says Miller.

Miller says our contributions to the United Way will be strategically distributed, with the focus on poverty, young people and stronger communities.
