The amount of crashes in Calgary went up on Tuesday with that dose of winter we received but police say despite the conditions, people just don’t get it.
Calgary Police say speed and distracted driving continue to be the two biggest problems they see on the roads.
Inspector Dean LaGrange tells 660News that when you speed your reaction time is severely reduced.
He uses the Deerfoot as an example, saying if you’re travelling 100 kms/hr, by the time you react and brake you will have travelled 77 metres which is nearly the length of a football field.
He adds, paying attention to the roadway in front of you and not just the vehicle in front but progressively down the road, keeping an eye on things like brake lights is absolutely critical in maintaining your ability to react to any kind of situations.
Between midnight and 4 p.m. Tuesday there were 130 collisions reported to police compared to the previous Tuesday when there were 86.
