A local club dedicated to flying model helicopters wants to be able to keep using a field in the northeast.
By-laws currently ban the flying of the radio controlled devices in city parks and streets, which means they can only fly them on private property.
The Calgary RC Heli Club has permission to use a field in the northeast, but a developer’s interest in the site is threatening their hobby.
The club says it’s not an unreasonable request, considering there are designated city spaces for pastimes like skateboarding.
A University of Calgary researcher tells The Calgary Herald the hobby’s popularity is taking off, and having a city sanctioned space may prevent amateurs from damaging property or hurting someone.
