Sad anniversary for some local families

It’s been 10 years since a group of students from an Okotoks school were killed in an avalanche on a back country field trip in Glacier National Park.

On Feb. 1, 2003, a group of teens from Strathcona-Tweedsmuir was travelling in the Connaught Creek Valley just west of Rogers Pass when they were swept up by a huge snow slide.

Seven students were killed.

Since then, both the school and Parks Canada have overhauled their policies when it comes to avalanche prone areas.

Strathcona-Tweedsmuir will mark the anniversary with a private memorial Friday.
