CBE schools struggle to be accessible

Disability advocates are raising alarm bells about dozens of schools in Calgary that are not doing enough to be accessible.

An audit last summer by the Calgary Board of Education found 29 per cent of schools rated very poorly for accessibility.

The schools are going without things like wheelchair washroom stalls and lifts.

CBE facilities superintendent Frank Coppinger says a lot of the schools were built in the 1970’s or earlier, and the cost to make improvements would be “astronomical.”

Coppinger tells The Calgary Herald they do their best to make sure there’s at least one elementary, middle and high school within a group of communities that is disability friendly.
