Calgary Transit fare evasion down

Calgary Transit says the number of people riding the rails without paying has been cut in half since last year.

Officials say the amount of people breaking the rules has dropped to two per cent.

Spokesperson Brian Whitelaw says it’s all thanks to stiffer fines, and a dedicated enforcement team.

Six peace officers now conduct regular ticket checks and those found without one can be fined $200.

The Calgary Sun reports with each offense the fines increase.
