Woman dies after Varsity blaze

A woman has died after a fire in the northwest community of Varsity Wednesday morning.

Crews say they were called to Vauxhall Crescent N.W. just before 6 a.m., with a second alarm sounded a short time later.

Two people were able to escape the blaze.

When fire crews arrived fire was coming out of the dryer vent and the windows were smoke stained. They attempted an interior attack on the blaze, but conditions became unsafe, forcing the crews back outside.

Crews battled the blaze for more than three hours before they could finally get inside the home and find the woman on the main floor.

An investigation has been launched into what caused the fire and how the woman died.

Neighbours say they’re shocked and saddened.
