High angle rescue team makes daring save

TD Square was the scene of a dramatic rescue 12 metres above the fourth floor food court early Thursday morning.
A maintenance worker is lucky to be alive after a pane of glass in the arched ceiling at TD Square dislodged, causing it to swing, strike him in the head and shatter.
The fire department responded to the 2 a.m. call for help, dispatching its high angle rescue team.
The injured worker was lying on scaffolding high above the food court.
Thankfully a crane, operated by Stampede Cranes, was in the building; firefighters used it to not only reach the injured worker, but to lift him through the hole in the ceiling onto the roof where he was loaded onto a stretcher and turned over to paramedics.
The unidentified worker is in hospital with a head injury.
Fire Battalion Chief Ernie Molineaux tells 660News access to the crane helped them complete the rescue in 30 minutes.
He adds without it, a much more complicated, higher-risk rope rescue would have been required.
