Avalanche caution issued for B.C.’s Southern Interior

The Canadian Avalanche Centre is saying you can have fun over the Family Day long weekend on the hills, just be careful.

The caution is mainly issued for those in B.C.’s Southern Interior, but it could also apply to Pincher Creek here in Alberta, depending on what kind of warm-up occurs.

Service Manager Karl Klassen tells 660News on Friday, snowpack conditions in some areas could catch riders off-guard.

He says, “Given that it’s been a very stable season so far, there’s been no incidents, there’s been no recreational fatalities. We just wanted to give people a heads up that things have changed a little bit in the southern interior and if they’re coming out, they should be prepared to see somewhat different snowpack than they’ve seen for the rest of the winter so far.”

The CSAC reports, on average, 14 people are killed in avalanches across Canada; this year just one fatality.
