Fathers, mothers, sons and daughters took advantage of Family Day.
Whether it was skating at the Olympic Oval, free skating at city arenas, fun at Heritage Park or the Winterfest at Fort Calgary, there was plenty of activities around the city.
Nicky Peters helped organize the event at Fort Calgary and was amazed at the response from family’s both young and old.
“We were unable to count them but there’s thousands of people,” she said. “I think it’s important for having family fun.”
Face-painting, games, theatre and family fun were the highlights of the city’s long weekend activities, including speed and precision skating demonstrations at the Oval.
Family Day evening is also the kick-off for the 7th Annual Midwinter Bluestfest in Inglewood.
However, it wasn’t a completely fun spirit on Family Day in the northwest.
During festivities held by the Rocky Ridge Royal Oak Community Association, there was also a rally where dozens of parents threw some heated questions at a representative from the Calgary Board of Education.
It stems from the board’s decision to drop the construction of a new middle school in the area down their priority list.
Angry parents asked board representative Joy Bowen-Eyre about the decision.
She echoed the message the call was not made based on politics, but rather on demand from other communities.
