City to design new central library

City officials are planning on launching a design competition for Calgary’s new $245-million Central Library.

The team building the new structure in Calgary’s East Village plans to select a new architect by September.

Mayor Naheed Nenshi says they want the library to be open for business by 2018.

The facility will house 600,000 books, but there will also be a larger focus on technology and gathering spaces.

City council gave unanimous approval for funds Monday that are allowing the project to move forward.
