Pope Benedict made his final appearance in public early Wednesday morning.

He appeared at 2:30 a.m. for his papal general audience in St. Peter’s Square, where thousands of pilgrims gathered to receive a blessing.

The Vatican says Benedict will be driven around the square, then go to a podium to give his remarks.

On Thursday, Benedict will officially step down, becoming the first pope in 600 years to resign rather than die in office.
