Albertans’ and Canadians’ told to scale back oilsands expectations

The former Chief Economist and Chief Strategist at CIBC World Markets says it’s very possible the full potential of the oilsands will never be fully realized.

Jeff Rubin tells 660News, pipeline constraints and market access issues are forcing oilsands operators to shelve future expansion plans.

Rubin says while many countries around the world are struggling with high energy prices and the drain they produce on economic growth, Alberta has the opposite problem, not getting full value for its energy products.

He says even if oilsands operations are not firing at 100 per cent they will still play an important role in the Alberta and Canadian economies, but likely won’t live up to previous hype.

Rubin says the Redford government should use the economic slowdown to ramp up efforts to diversify the province’s economy.

Rubin is in town as part of an eco tour that is being put on by Wordfest at the central library downtown.

He will be joined by highly respected environmentalist and scientist David Suzuki.

The event at the John Dutton Theatre starts at 7 pm, still some tickets available.
