Canadians continue to pack on the pounds

A new study says obesity rates across the country have been steadily increasing over the past decade.

Researchers at the University of British Columbia say the highest levels of obesity are in the Maritimes and the Territories.

According to the numbers between 25 and 29 per cent of Alberta adults are now considered obese, up about five percentage points from 2000.

Body Break star Hal Johnson tells 660News, more important than the body mass index is your body fat index.

Johnson says the call to action for men should sound when the BFI hits 25 per cent, 30 per cent for women.

He says when it comes to weight issues, even more important than exercise is what types of food and drinks your put into your body.

Johnson says the old adage everything in moderation no longer holds true, he says there are certain foods people should try and avoid like junk food and sugary drinks.

Researchers say packing on the pounds increases the risk of chronic illnesses, such as heart disease, diabetes and some cancers.
